Preparation

introduction

Fall is a very likeable season with the weather cooling down after the blazing summer, the soup season, pumpkin spice drinks, and of course, Fall Family Portraits! This is the most magical time for them; the golden light, vibrant changing leaves, and the cozy wardrobe. They all create a timeless backdrop that we all love.

However, a beautiful session isn’t just about the scenery; it’s about preparation, comfort, and connection. With a few thoughtful steps, you can make your session smooth, relaxed, and full of genuine laughter. Whether this is your first family photoshoot or your yearly tradition, these tips will help you feel confident and ready. Let’s make your fall session as stress-free and stunning as possible.

1. Clothing & Style

Your outfits set the tone for your photos and help tie everything together visually. Aim for looks that reflect your family’s style while complementing the fall colors around you.

Coordinate, Don't Match

I preface this with unless it's intentional! I'm game if that's the look you are going for, and no shame! This is especially popular for more Holiday pictures - matching pajamas or sweaters.

But for those who aren't in the same same style, coordinating can make the world difference. Choose a coordinating color palette - think warm neutrals, soft greens, deep reds, and mustard yellows. Each family member can express their own style within those tones so the final look feels natural and balanced. This gives a beautiful contrast to the background.

Keep It Comfortable

If everyone’s comfortable, everyone’s happy. Choose fabrics that breathe and move well, especially for little ones (Yes, I italicized 'especially'. This is so important for them; we don't want to set them off any earlier than we need to). I will tell you again once we are in the session, but I absolutely love movement throughout the session. You'll be walking, sitting, maybe even playing in the leaves, so comfort matters just as much as style.

Layer Up

Fall weather can be unpredictable, so layering is key. Think scarves, cardigans, or light jackets that can easily be added or removed. Layers also add visual depth and texture to your photos, making them feel warm and dimensional. And remember, the thing with layers is that you can always remove them as the session goes or for your own comfort.

Embrace the Colors of the Season

Let the natural surroundings guide you. Earthy tones, burnt oranges, and forest greens complement the fall landscape beautifully. Try to avoid neon or overly bright colors that may distract from the soft, cozy atmosphere.

2. Logistics & Preparation

A successful session starts with good planning. A few small details can make a big difference in how smooth and enjoyable your experience feels.

Book & Plan Early

Fall is one of the busiest times of the year for photographers. Booking early not only secures your ideal date but also gives you time to coordinate outfits, choose your location, and prepare without stress. But we all know that planning early isn't always on table for everyone. Sometimes, you get busy and you let it go by the waist side until you remember "Oh Shoot, out family pictures~!". No worries, I usually have last minute slots to be able to help, and if you're not in my area, try to check out your local photographers. Doesn't hurt to ask!

Pack a On-the-Go Bag

If you're a parent, you already know this, but bring a small bag with essentials: wipes, water, snacks, tissues, a comb, and maybe a favorite toy for little ones.

This isn't only applicable to babies and toddlers! You can have one for your older kids and one even for your couples session! Having these handy keeps everyone happy and minimizes interruptions during your session.

Be fed & Well Rested

A full belly and enough rest can make all the difference, again, especially for kids. Plan meals or naps so your family feels energized and comfortable when it’s time to shoot. You want to find a good medium in the meals you eat that day. You don't want to eat too heavy to where you are lethargic and want to lay down for the photo shoot (But accidents happen so if you happen to stop by Korean BBQ before your session, I'm good to pivot to a picnic style shoot with lots of sitting lol). You want to make sure you eat enough to be energized, maybe even a light snack to eat right before the shoot.

🎀 A note to mama: This includes you! Trust me, I understand how hectic the mornings of photo shoots can be. Between doing hairs, making sure the clothes are still a good fit because you didn't have time to try the outfit on earlier in the week, then making sure they don't get the clothes dirty during breakfast and don't let me get started if little Malik didn't take his nap today! I know that doesn't even tip the iceberg of how hectic it can be! Try to prepare by packing your favorite breakfast bar or meat stick, so you can easily eat on the go in the front seat without your kids asking for some. A little bit of food will make the difference in how the session will go. Remember, you're not you when you're hungry!

Timing & Being on Time

Lighting changes quickly in the fall, and golden hour waits for no one! I always arrive at least 30 minutes prior to your session, unless I am hosting mini sessions; those days, I may be there for much longer. Arriving a few minutes early ensures you’re relaxed and ready to start. Plus, it gives the kids (and you) a chance to get comfortable before the camera comes out.

Again, things happen; but if you are ever in the position that you're running late, Communication is Key! Please communicate to  your photographer, even if its 5 minutes late.

3. Mindset & Connection

The best photos happen when families feel connected, not posed or pressured.

Focus on each other

You'll hear me say this often during our session, but play, laugh, and interact naturally with each other. Don’t worry about looking perfect, focus on being present. I'll make sure to get a variety of shots - some posed and some actions. And my goal for you is to get natural, not awkward photos of you and your family, and yours is to focus on each other and the moment. Plus, those in-between giggles and glances are often the most beautiful shots.

Go with the Flow

Kids may not always cooperate perfectly, and that’s okay. Some of the sweetest images come from spontaneous moments; running, playing, or hugging unexpectedly. It's hard especially when you are a little more structured, like me, or just have a vision on how you want them to look; but its important to let go of expectations and trust the process.

As your photographer, we'll go over any absolute shots that you want to have and your vision prior to your session; but you can trust me to make it happen for you. I got you!

4. Location & Atmosphere

Where you shoot is just as important as what you wear. The right setting adds texture and emotion to your photos.

Choose a Meaningful Location

Whether it’s your favorite park, a scenic overlook, or your own backyard, pick a spot that feels like “you.” Familiar spaces help everyone feel relaxed and authentic.

Think About the Light

Fall light is soft, golden, and fleeting — ideal for dreamy, cinematic portraits. Sessions scheduled around sunrise or sunset capture that magic best.

5. Kids & Toddlers

If you’re planning a family photoshoot with little ones, the best thing you can do is let go of perfection and focus on connection. Kids are naturally expressive, curious, and full of energy. That’s what makes their photos so special.

Set Gentle Expectations

Whether it’s your favorite park, a scenic overlook, or your own backyard, pick a spot that feels like “you.” Familiar spaces help everyone feel relaxed and authentic.

Make It Fun

6. Trust Your Photographer

You’ve done the prep, now it’s time to enjoy it.

Relax & Let Go

The best thing you can bring to your session is joy. Trust your photographer’s direction, be yourself, and have fun. When you’re relaxed, it shows in every frame.

Remember the Purpose

These photos aren’t about perfection; they’re about connection, laughter, and preserving this season of life. Long after the leaves fall, you’ll look back on these moments with gratitude.

Final Thoughts

From wardrobe choices to laughter-filled moments, every detail comes together to tell your family’s story, authentically and beautifully. If you’re ready to book your own fall family session, I’d love to capture those memories for you.
