1. Brookside Gardens (Wheaton, MD)
Hours:
Outdoor gardens: sunrise–sunset. Visitor Center: 9 am–4 pm daily.
Best time:
For photography around the holidays (though not a tree-farm specifically), aim for early afternoon when light is still warm but fewer families have arrived. Avoid peak weekends (after Thanksgiving) and schedule around 1-3 pm on a weekday.
Why this location works / what’s unique:
Brookside Gardens offers a lush backdrop while still being remarkably close to Silver Spring — the tall trees, graceful walkways, and soft open lawns create a timeless, elegant setting for holiday family portraits. In late November and December the garden’s natural light becomes golden and subdued, which pairs beautifully with your warm, luxe styling. The variety of garden “rooms” means you can move between leafy shade, open fields, and textured backgrounds for a rich mix of shots.
Permit information:
Photography is allowed for personal/family use, but special-occasion photography (including professional shoots) may require a permit. For the Garden of Lights event, all personal photography is allowed but special-occasion shoots require contact.
Opening day / season 2025 note:
While the outdoor gardens are open year-round (sunrise to sunset) the prominent holiday event, Garden of Lights, runs Nov 21, 2025 – Jan 4, 2026 (though that’s for lights, not exactly the daylight session)
2. North Star Christmas Trees – Chevy Chase
This tree-lot setting brings an authentic holiday atmosphere — rows of freshly cut trees, rustic ve-hicles, and festive lighting provide naturally textured backgrounds. Opening day / season 2025 note:
Opening for the 2025 season on Wednesday November 19, 2025
Hours:
Opens the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. Mon–Thu: 12 pm-9 pm; Fri/Sat/Sun: 10 am-9 pm; Christmas Eve: 10 am–3 pm.

Early weekday (Mon–Thu) afternoons are least crowded. If you go Sat/Sun, aim for opening hour (10 am) for fewer families and better light.

Additional Tips
- Avoid the busiest times: The weekends right after Thanksgiving through mid-December can be crowded at tree-lots and farms.
- Lighting matters: For locations with open fields, aim for the “golden hour” window: about 1–2 hours before sunset. In winter with shorter days, this may be ~2-4 pm.

- Midweek advantages: Tuesdays–Thursdays often have fewer families, easier parking, and more relaxed sessions.
- Weather backup: If it rains or is extremely cold, your in-home option (#8) is a cozy, safe alternative.
