If you’re hoping for flowers in your photos, May is one of the best months in the DMV.
Everything is in that sweet spot; not early spring anymore, but not quite summer. The colors are full, the greens are rich, and the blooms are actually reliable.
But here’s the thing most people don’t realize:
Not all flowers bloom at the same time.
And not every location looks the same in May.
So if you’re dreaming of a specific look (soft florals, wildflower fields, roses, etc.), choosing the right location matters just as much as choosing the date.
Here are some of my favorite spots in the DMV for May flower sessions, what blooms you can expect, and what kind of photos each location is perfect for.
Soft Garden Florals & Classic Spring Blooms
🌸
1. Brookside Gardens - Silver Spring, MD
If you want variety, this is the safest (and prettiest) bet.
In May, Brookside is full of layered blooms; tulips may be fading, but you’ll start seeing late spring flowers, lush greenery, and beautifully maintained garden spaces. It feels romantic, clean, and timeless.
What blooms in May:
- late tulips (early May)
- azaleas
- wisteria
- early roses (depending on timing)
Best for:
- maternity sessions
- soft, polished portraits
- families wanting a “put together” look
Keep in mind:
- Can get busy, so weekdays or mornings are best
- Permit required (Last I checked, $50)
2. Bon Air Rose Garden - Arlington, VA
If your vision is floral and feminine, this is it.
By mid-to-late May, the roses start showing up and it turns into a soft, romantic garden that photographs beautifully.
What blooms in May:
- roses (peaking late May into June)
Best for:
- maternity sessions
- mom + baby moments
- close, connection-focused photos
Wildflower Fields & Natural Blooms
🌿
3. McKee-Beshers Wildlife Management Area (Sunflower Fields Area) – Poolesville, MD
Okay, hear me out, this spot is known for sunflowers later in the year…
BUT in May, it’s actually full of wild greenery and early field growth that gives you that open, airy, nature feel. It’s less about flowers here and more about space and softness.
What blooms in May:
- fresh green fields
- early wild growth
- open skies + soft textures
Best for:
- families who want movement
- barefoot, relaxed vibes
- sunset sessions
3. Patuxent Research Refuge – Laurel, MD
This is one of my favorite low-key spring locations.
It’s quiet, peaceful, and in May everything turns a rich green with small wildflowers scattered throughout.
Nothing overly “perfect”. Just real, natural beauty.
What blooms in May:
- wildflowers (varies year to year)
- tall grasses beginning to grow
- full greenery
Best for:
- candid, relaxed sessions
- families who want privacy
- nature-focused photos
Fields + Open Space with a Spring Glow
🌼
5. Meadowbrook Park – Chevy Chase, MD
May here is all about fresh greens and soft light.
You won’t get heavy florals, but you will get clean, glowing backgrounds that photograph beautifully — especially in the evening.
What blooms in May:
- lush green grass
- tree-lined paths
- soft, filtered sunlight
Best for:
- light, airy sessions
- families + maternity
- simple, timeless photos
6. Centennial Park – Ellicott City, MD
This is a great “do a little bit of everything” location.
In May, everything is green, the lake reflects light beautifully, and there are small seasonal blooms throughout the park.
What blooms in May:
- scattered spring flowers
- flowering trees (early May)
- greenery everywhere
Best for:
- variety in one session
- families
- easy, accessible sessions
DC Spring (Post-Cherry Blossom Season)

7. National Arboretum – Washington, DC
Once cherry blossom season ends, THIS is where I send people. It still has spring blooms, but way more space and flexibility.
What blooms in May:
- azaleas
- dogwoods
- seasonal garden flowers
Best for:
- variety + space
- families who don’t want crowds
- a mix of structured + natural backdrops
8. Bishop’s Garden (National Cathedral) – Washington, DC
This one feels like a secret garden.
Stone archways, climbing greenery, and seasonal blooms give it a romantic, slightly European feel.
What blooms in May:
- climbing florals
- garden plants
- lush greenery
Best for:
- couples + maternity
- something unique
- a more editorial look
A Hidden Gem for Flower Lovers
🌷
9. Green Spring Gardens – Alexandria, VA
This is like Brookside… but quieter.
It has curated flower beds, seasonal blooms, and a very soft, peaceful feel without the heavy foot traffic.
What blooms in May:
- peonies (depending on timing)
- garden florals
- layered spring blooms
Best for:
- moms who want florals without crowds
- soft, romantic sessions
10. Your Home (Yes, really)
I know this sounds simple, but in May?
Your yard might already have:
- blooming trees
- fresh grass
- flowers you planted
- soft morning or evening light
And honestly… it doesn’t get more personal than that.
Best for:
- newborn + family sessions
- relaxed, cozy moments
- meaningful, real-life photos
