One of the best parts of in-home sessions is that they don’t have to be perfect. They just need to feel like you. Still, a few small touches can help your space look its best while keeping the atmosphere relaxed and cozy.
1. Let in the Light
Natural light is your best friend! Before your session, open your blinds and curtains to invite in that soft winter glow. If your space feels a bit dim, don’t worry, cozy light is part of the charm.
Your photographer will help you find the best-lit spots, but candles, twinkle lights, and even the soft flicker of your Christmas tree can create the dreamiest holiday atmosphere.
Bonus tip:
Turn off overhead lights to avoid harsh shadows and let the warm tones from your lamps and décor do the work.
2. Pick Two to Three “Photo-Ready” Spots
You don’t need to style your entire house or have the Pinterest-perfect house. A few intentional spaces would be perfect. You can choose 2-3 cozy corners that represent your family the best.
Here are some easy favorites:
- By the Christmas Tree. Perfect for family cuddles, gift wrapping, or ornament moments.
- The living room couch. Ideal for relaxed, genuine interactions.
- The kitchen. Baking cookies, decorating gingerbread, or enjoying hot cocoa.
- The bedroom. Not only is the bed a natural prop, but there is typically a window that is perfect for some contrast photos.
Just choose the spots where your family naturally spends time and I will work creatively with your space.
3. Turn on the heat (Mainly for Lifestyle Newborn Session)
Especially in the winter, I highly recommend turning on your heat and set it between 74 - 80 degrees! We may do an outfit change and most likely take photos with baby in a diaper.
Keeping your home more on the warm side helps with the comfort for you and baby.
4. Embrace the Imperfections
Real life doesn’t stop for photos and that’s what makes in-home sessions so meaningful. If your toddler’s hair sticks up, the dog keeps photo-bombing, or someone spills cocoa halfway through, just laugh and keep going.
The beauty of an in-home session is that it’s yours. The chaos, the laughter, the coziness; all of it tells your story far better than a perfectly staged setup ever could.
Bonus Tip:
A few seasonal details go a long way; twinkle lights, candles, wreaths, or even a plate of cookies. Keep it simple and let the warmth of your home shine through.
5. Keep It Cozy and Authentic
Think of your session as a relaxed holiday morning rather than a formal portrait day. Don’t stress about tidying every corner. Soft textures, warm drinks, and snuggles on the couch are the moments that make these photos feel real.
You don’t need matching pajamas or designer outfits, though if that’s your vibe, I love it! Focus on complementary tones that work well with your home décor (neutrals, deep reds, soft greens, creams, or cozy knits).
What to have nearby:
• A cozy throw blanket
• Hot cocoa or coffee mugs
• A holiday book or board game for the kids

6. Plan Something You Love
Whether it’s making cocoa, decorating, reading to your kids, or playing with your pets, plan a small, meaningful activity. It gives everyone something to focus on — and those interactions create the most genuine, heartfelt photos.
7. Set the mood (and the playlist)
Music changes everything. Before your session, turn on your favorite holiday playlist; whether it’s classic Christmas, lo-fi jazz, or Mariah Carey on repeat. It’ll help everyone loosen up and create a natural, joyful energy.
Light a candle, put on your slippers, and let your home feel alive. When you’re comfortable and happy, it shows in every frame.
8. Trust the Process and Enjoy
You’ve done the prep, now it’s time to relax. Your photographer (that’s where I come in!) will guide you through gentle prompts, flattering light, and natural interactions. You don’t have to perform, just be yourselves.
Take a breath, soak in the holiday magic, and know that you’re creating more than just photos; you’re preserving what this season feels like for your family.
Your Home, Your Holiday Story
This Christmas, don’t worry about packing everyone into coats or standing in line at a studio. Let your home and your family’s laughter be the backdrop.
These are the images that bring back not just what it looked like, but what it felt like.
If that’s the kind of holiday story you want to remember, I’d love to capture it for you. Cozy socks, cocoa mugs, and all.
