Your baby’s first year goes by fast like “blink twice and suddenly they’re crawling” fast. As a mom myself, I know how quickly those tiny expressions, chubby rolls, and sweet little quirks change from one month to the next.

That’s why First Year photography is such a meaningful way to document the journey. Each stage has its own magic, and certain months are perfect for milestone sessions because of what your baby is naturally learning or discovering at that time.

If you’re planning a First Year collection with Momoire & Co, or even just a few milestone sessions, here’s a simple guide to help you choose the best ages to capture.

2–4 Months: The Sweet Snuggly Stage

This stage is all about connection, softness, and expression.

Think:

  • big gummy smiles
  • eye contact
  • soft coos
  • tiny fingers gripping yours
  • cozy in-home cuddles

At this age, babies love being held, so most photos are taken in your arms or snuggled on your chest. This is the perfect milestone if you want a calm, tender session without the chaos of crawling or rolling.

Best for: families who want dreamy, cozy, soulful portraits.

Location: In-home session works beautifully here.

5–6 Months: The Personality Stage

This is one of the BEST times to photograph your baby.

By now they’re usually:

  • smiling on command
  • laughing
  • grabbing toes
  • propped up on elbows
  • starting to sit with support

Your baby’s personality really starts to shine, and the expressions are priceless. You also get more variation — tummy time photos, supported sitting photos, and lots of cute, chubby-faced curiosity.

Best for: bright, joyful milestone photos full of personality.

Location: Indoors or outdoors; both work beautifully at this age.

6–8 Months: The Sitting-Up Stage

If you had to choose one milestone session this year… this is it.

Why? Babies who can sit (but not crawl yet) are the easiest and most photogenic milestone age:

  • stable sitting
  • adorable chubbiness
  • tons of curiosity
  • big laughs
  • they stay in one place (lol)
  • can wear ALL the cute outfits

This age gives so much variety and interaction and toddlers aren’t mobile enough to wiggle out of the frame every five seconds.

Best for: clean, bright, timeless portraits; outdoor sessions shine here.

9–10 Months: The Explorers

Welcome to the “I want to touch everything and taste nothing that’s actual food” era.

This milestone is great if you want:

  • crawling photos
  • pulling up on furniture
  • standing while holding your hands
  • early walking attempts
  • tons of action

It’s a beautifully chaotic age; full of movement, discovery, and curiosity.

Best for: candid, lifestyle, playful imagery with lots of interaction.

12 Months: Baby’s First Birthday Session

And then… somehow, they’re one.

First birthday sessions can be photographed:

  • in-home
  • outdoors
  • with a simple cake smash
  • or a minimal, clean aesthetic

Think:

  • standing
  • early walking
  • clapping
  • waving
  • personality turned ALL the way up

You can also bring sentimental items like:

  • their first stuffed animal
  • their hospital blanket
  • a birthday banner
  • family heirlooms
  • their favorite book

These sessions are emotional and meaningful — perfect for updating photos before transitioning into toddlerhood.

Best for: milestone galleries, winter indoor sessions, cake smash, clean portraits.

Final Thoughts

You don’t need to photograph every single month — just the ones that feel meaningful to you. Whether it’s a cozy 3-month snuggle session, a chubby 6-month sitter session, or the big, emotional first birthday milestone, every stage tells a part of your baby’s story.

If you’re thinking about booking First Year sessions, I would love to help capture your baby’s growth in a warm, natural, and connected way — something you’ll cherish long after their baby years are over.
