The Truth About “Harsh Light”

If you’ve ever heard that photos should only be taken during golden hour, you’re not alone. While that soft, glowing light near sunset is undeniably dreamy, midday sessions, anytime between 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. can be just as stunning in their own way.

The key isn’t the time of day, it’s how I, or your photographer uses the light. With the right approach, bright sunlight can create crisp, luminous, and joy-filled images that feel alive and full of energy.

The Beauty of Midday Sessions

Here’s why sessions in full daylight can actually be a win:

1. Bright, Clean, True-to-Life Color

Midday light tends to bring out vibrant colors and crystal-clear detail. Whites look pure, skin tones glow naturally, and your environment — whether it’s a meadow, park, or downtown street — looks full of life.

2. Perfect for Young Families

If you have little ones, you know the struggle of planning around nap time. Morning and early afternoon sessions often align better with your family’s natural rhythm — everyone’s fed, rested, and happy.

3. Flexibility and Comfort

Outdoor locations are typically less crowded earlier in the day, and we don’t have to worry about rushing before sunset. You can enjoy your session unrushed, with time to breathe, play, and be present.

How I Work with Bright Light

At Momoire & Co, I don’t shy away from midday sun, I work with it. The secret lies in finding or creating the right kind of light.

Here’s what that looks like:

Open shade: I’ll guide you to spots under trees, porches, or building edges that soften direct rays.

Directional light: We’ll use the sun’s position to our advantage, letting it gently rim your hair or illuminate the background.

Creative angles: I adjust composition constantly; crouching low, stepping back, or shifting direction to keep lighting flattering and natural.

Light diffusion tools: Sometimes I’ll use reflective surfaces or soft diffusion to balance brightness without losing that airy feel.

So, instead of avoiding sunlight, I let it tell the story — radiant, authentic, and full of life.

What to Wear for a Midday Session

When the sun is high, wardrobe choices can make a big difference. Opt for tones and textures that photograph beautifully in bright light:

• Soft neutrals like beige, sage, or blush help diffuse reflection.

• Avoid bright white or neon tones that can reflect harshly.

• Add texture: linen, cotton, and knits look amazing under sunlight.

• Bring along sunglasses or hats for relaxed, candid moments (and bonus: it keeps the session fun!).
